The holiday season has brought some new sample and preset offerings.

Spring, Echo, Distort

The latest pack is the first full, boutique drum sample library, Spring, Echo, Distort, from Dust Palace.

Created by drummer and musical director, Joe Clegg (profiled in the Nov 2019 digitalDrummer), the professional collection of creative and unusual sounds has been designed with live performance in mind.

Clegg, founder of Dust Palace, is known for his work as a live drummer with Ellie Goulding, and musical director with Ellie, Mumford & Sons, Clean Bandit and others. He invited professional touring drummers, Adam Marcello (Katy Perry – and digitalDrummer’s featured artist in Nov 2020), Andrew Marshall (Billie Eilish), and Gunnar Olsen (Bruce Springsteen) to help create additional royalty-free drum loops and pre-sets.

Spring, Echo, Distort features three classic drum machines, sampled through six analogue effect units to produce more than 1,200 samples. It also includes 180 artist loops.

The library uses a wide range of analogue spring reverb, tape echo and distortion, captured at four stages of input gain, through a collection of analogue units fed back into Ableton through Neve 1073 pre-amps.

The sample pack and loops are compatible with all DAWs, with presets exclusively for Ableton Live 10 Intro, Standard and Suite.

If you’re not convinced enough to spend £49, you can try Dust Palace’s free KIK/SNR pack, consisting of 52 one-shot samples recorded with a vintage 1960s kick and a ‘70s snare processed through 12 of their favourite analogue effects units.

CP Samples for TD-17

Chris Whitten has released a new expansion pack for the Roland TD-17.

The pack includes 26 all-new kit presets, featuring 147 new samples not available in the module’s stock sounds. These were recorded at some of the top UK studios, including Real World, Chiswick Reach, Jacobs and Mark Knopfler’s British Grove.

Whitten, who has been featured regularly in digitalDrummer, is best known as a touring drummer with Paul McCartney and Dire Straits, and has sampled some of his favourite drums including pieces from his Noble & Cooley, Pearl, Yamaha, Craviotto, Tama, Pork Pie, Camco, Ludwig and Simmons kits.

The recordings were supervised by Peter Henderson, whose achievements have included production of Supertramp’s 'Breakfast In America', for which he won a Grammy (Best Engineered Album). Henderson has also worked with Paul McCartney, Rush, Frank Zappa and Jeff Beck.

The pair previously collaborated on Whitten’s samples for the Roland TM-6 Pro and the 'Chris Whitten Drums' expansion pack for the TM-6 Pro.

Great British Studios Expansion for Roland TD-17 is available online for £40, and there are three free kits which can be found here: https://www.cpsamples.co.uk/shop/p/great-british-studios-for-td-17-3-free-kits.

The Alamo for TD-27

Melbourne, Australia-based World of Music is following the lead of drum-tec in Germany by offering custom sound packs with the Roland kits and modules it sells.

The latest cab off the rank is The Alamo Studio Sessions pack for TD-27, a revised version of the packs offered for TD-17 and TD-50.

The Alamo patches, named after the studio attached to the music store, add 23 kits of the module, including samples from the studio’s extensive collection of vintage and modern kits.

“All our sounds are made using the highest sample rate the module allows of recordings of real kits and snares at our in-house recording studio; we then blend / craft and tweak these with internal sounds for realism,” says Tim O'Halloran, the drummer behind the project.

The sample pack is free for module/kit customers, and available for A$79 for anyone else.

And how do they sound? digitalDrummer is testing them right now and will report in full in the February edition.
