The Iso Files: Shane Russell (Twelve Foot Ninja)

Where you are in isolation: At home in Berwick, Melbourne, Australia.

What projects you are working on: A couple of mini projects with my band, Twelve Foot Ninja. I recently tracked drums at home for a cover song we just released by Huey Lewis and the News. The song was Stuck with you, inspired by being stuck at home through this period. I've also been re-working a couple of old Ninja tracks that we are performing acoustically via Zoom for 'Metal Injection' in the States. They have organised a 'Slay at home festival', asking a bunch of bands to perform via Zoom in an attempt to raise money for struggling musicians.

What gear you are using: I'm using a hybrid Roland TD-20/TD-50 and it's the duck’s nuts! I'm basically using the TD-20 pads with a recently updated TD-50 digital pack which comes with the TD-50 module, digital snare and digital ride. I'm using a 2011 MacBook Pro, with the latest Protools installed, running Superior Drummer 3. The combination of using the Roland kit and Superior Drummer 3 is a powerful one!

What you miss most: I miss touring and playing live and I also really miss being in the same room with my band mates. I never thought I would say that!

How you think this experience is going to change music production going forward: I think it's going to show people that you can really achieve great results producing songs and top-notch recordings from the comfort of your own home. We've been doing it this way forever, so nothing has really changed for us. But it will open the eyes of some purists, I think.
