Producer launches free MIDI mapping app

Akhil C S, a software developer and music producer, has launched a free online tool designed to solve a common and often frustrating problem faced by electronic drummers and producers: remapping MIDI drum files between different virtual drum instruments.

The web app, OnlineMidiRemap.com, allows users to easily convert MIDI drum parts created in one drum library to match the mapping of another — a process that typically requires tedious manual editing or the use of expensive commercial software.

“There are many drum libraries out there, and each one uses its own custom MIDI mapping,” Akhil explains. “It can be really time-consuming to manually translate between them.”

The MIDI mapping maze

For e-drummers and music producers who use virtual instruments (VSTs) like EZdrummer, Superior Drummer, Addictive Drums, BFD, GetGood Drums, and others, mismatched MIDI maps are a familiar challenge. One plugin may assign a snare hit to note D1, while another places it on E1. These inconsistencies make it difficult to switch libraries or collaborate across platforms without extensive tweaking.

Akhil’s tool bridges this gap by providing a fast and accessible way to remap MIDI files, offering relief to those who work with multiple drum libraries or share MIDI sessions with other musicians.

Built by a musician for musicians

With more than six years of experience in software development and nearly a decade of music production, mixing, and mastering under his belt, Akhil was uniquely positioned to create this solution.

“I built it over two or three days to scratch my own itch,” he says. “There were no free tools available for this purpose, and I felt others might benefit from it as well.”

Community-driven and free to use

While many developers might have turned such a tool into a paid product, Akhil decided to release it for free.

“Everything these days is locked behind a subscription,” he says. “I wanted to offer something useful that fellow musicians could access without barriers.”

The site is minimalistic, with a focus on ease of use. Upload a MIDI file, choose your source and target drum libraries, and download a remapped version — no login required.

Whats Next?

Akhil has a vision for expanding the tool’s capabilities. Future features may include automatic velocity adjustment, support for more drum libraries, and even AI-powered mapping suggestions.

For now, OnlineMidiRemap.com stands as a valuable free resource for producers, drummers, and composers alike — especially those juggling multiple VSTs or working in collaborative setups.
