Split the difference

digitalDrummer often gets questions about adding drums and cymbals by splitting inputs. It’s a common challenge: connecting more triggers when you have maxed out your drum module. In theory, since most inputs on most modules are stereo (TSR), you should be able to connect two pads or cymbals to each input with a simple cable. But, unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case, and we continue to get questions from readers who don’t understand why they are not able to assign different instrument sounds to the connected pads. In this article, we will delve into the concept of input splitting, highlighting which inputs are splittable and which are not and what kind of connectors are required. Understanding input splitting Very […]

Keeping e-drummers ‘appy

Module makers are realising that users often want easier and better control than they traditionally got via buttons, knobs and sliders on the drum brain. Enter the e-drum module app – probably pioneered by Yamaha, with its DTX Touch apps. Today, many drum kits and modules have companion apps, and here, we run through some of their functions and features. Alesis Alesis was among the first to realise the potential of the iPad as a drum controller, with its pioneering DM Dock product. The Dock connected pads and cymbals to an interface powered by an iPad and the formidable DM Touch app. The app transformed iPads into capable drum modules, allowing users to use their tablet to control triggering, adjust […]

Efnote 7 goes on sale

The much-anticipated new Efnote flagship, the Efnote 7, is now available in the US. The kit features larger acoustic shells than the Efnote 5, with a 20×15″ kick, 14” three-zone snare, 15×15” floor tom, and 11×8″ rack tom. The non-standard tom sizes have raised a few eyebrows since they were first flagged, but the Japanese e-drum maker has stuck to its guns, insisting the ratio “was precisely designed to create synergy between sound, sight and feel”. The kit boasts the world’s first 20” ride cymbal, along with a 16” crash and 14” two-piece hi-hats. The kit is powered by an Efnote 7 module, which is hard to differentiate from the Efnote 5 brain. The specs show one difference – three […]

Michael C. Stone: How I Use E-drums

Michael C. Stone recently added an Efnote 5 kit to his arsenal. I work in and around Southern California as a performing/recording drummer with multiple acts, most notably Ron Blair of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers fame, the Chris Torres Band, Atomic Groove, and the Drabs. I’ve also performed and/or recorded with Earl Slick (David Bowie, John Lennon), Stevie Salas (George Clinton, Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger), Jim Keltner (Studio Legend), Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Average White Band), Luis Maldonado (Train, Foreigner), Hattie Webb (Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers) and many more. In 2017, I appeared on Carl King’s Grand Architects of the Universe, an album that features some of the most accomplished drummers in the […]

Efnote features in winning soundtrack

Efnote’s new flagship kit, the Efnote 7, is featured in a new surf film by Peter Hamblin, called “Sweet Adventure”, which picked up both the “Best Soundtrack” and “Picture of the Year” awards at London’s Surf Film Festival 2021. The soundtrack is composed by Michael Bedard, Efnote’s US-based drum expert, who also appears playing the Efnote 7 drum kit in the opening scene at Hamblin’s request. (See image.) The Efnote 7 features full-size shells and cymbals along with real drum samples in the module.

Efnote 7 revealed

Japan’s Efnote has released some information about its new flagship kit, the Efnote 7. The major difference from the Efnote 5 is the full-size pads and cymbals in the kit, which features a 20 x 15″ kick drum, 14 x 5.5″ snare drum, an 11 x 8″ hanging tom and a 15 x 15″ floor tom. Many will question the non-traditional tom sizes. The cymbals have also been supersized, with the inclusion of a 20″ ride cymbal, alongside the 14” two-piece hi-hat and 16” crash. The Efnote 7 module looks like a minor tweak of the Efnote 5 brain. Indeed, it weighs exactly the same and has the same dimensions, so the only differences are internal. On paper, the only […]
