The intersection of cutting-edge technology and world-class performance is set to take centre stage as digitalDrummer returns to the Europe Drum Show. The E-drum Labs at Messe Friedrichshafen (April 11–12, 2026) will feature a powerhouse mix of industry legends, “grassroots” inventors and the European debut of gear that is currently redefining the market.
The Heavy Hitters: Schumacher and Fisher
Leading the charge is Ralf Schumacher, the 2023 digitalDrummer E-drummer of the Year. A seasoned pro with over 20 years of experience, Schumacher is a prominent content creator and brand ambassador.
- The Session: Performing on an EFNOTE Pro kit, Schumacher will dive into the latest module sounds and share his expert workflow for studio production, content creation, and high-energy live performance.
Joining him is digitalDrummer Hall of Famer Steven Fisher. With a resume that includes decades at Roland and Yamaha, Fisher is currently the driving force behind Hong Kong giant Medeli.
- The Session: Fisher will showcase the Medeli MZ928 flagship kit. Known for his work with legends like Chaka Khan and Dizzy Gillespie, Steven will reveal the “hidden secrets” of e-drum kits — teaching drummers how to navigate stock patches and edit sounds with lightning speed to get the exact tone they need.
Innovation and Controllers: E. Doctor Smith
Bringing a touch of pop history and specialised controller expertise is E. Doctor Smith. Having collaborated with Madonna and Stephen Bray during the 1980s, “Doc” eventually took his percussion journey into the world of custom builds. Smith will be jetting in from the United States especially for the E-drum Labs.
- The Session: Doc will discuss his invention, The Drummstick, and his transition to the Zendrum ZX. He will demonstrate how these unique finger-pad controllers are utilised in diverse settings, from theatrical performances to modern recording sessions.
The Innovation Showcase: Power to the DIY Community
A core highlight of the program is the Innovation Showcase, a platform dedicated to independent developers pushing the boundaries of the medium.
“There is a significant amount of experimentation happening outside the established manufacturers,” explains digitalDrummer editor Allan Leibowitz. “This showcase gives independent developers a platform while giving e-drummers insight into alternative approaches.”
Featured Innovations Include:
- DrumPi: A compact sound module by Paolo Simonazzi, offering a standalone alternative to laptop-based VST setups with ultra-low latency.
- inDrum Trigger: A Swedish “home-brew” digital trigger from Enes Sabanovic, featuring tech not yet found in commercial products.
- EavesDrum: A DIY trigger-to-MIDI interface from Tobias Gunkel, designed as a streamlined alternative to more costly production units.
Performance Masters: Brand and Haselsteiner
Dirk Brand, one of Germany’s most prolific drummers and a long-time face of the V-Drums movement, will lead a session on versatility. Brand will demonstrate how to choose and “tweak” samples across various manufacturers to suit genres ranging from metal to musical theatre, including his specialised techniques for playing e-drums with brushes.
The virtual frontier will be explored by Arno Haselsteiner, who will provide a live demonstration of AeroDrums 2. The session will highlight the precision tracking and dynamic response of this camera-based system, proving that “air drumming” has evolved into a legitimate, professional tool for stage and studio.
The Gear Finale: Yamaha EAD 50
Closing out the Labs is leading e-drum evangelist Simon Edgoose, who will demonstrate the Yamaha EAD 50. Fresh from its massive buzz at NAMM, the EAD 50 is being hailed as a “DAW in a box” for hybrid drummers, offering expanded processing power and trigger support that bridges the gap between acoustic feel and digital control.
